The air hangs heavy with the scent of fresh asphalt and possibilities. Brooks, once a bustling Air Force Base, now a sprawling community brimming with life. It’s a metamorphosis, a legacy transformed. The story begins a century ago, a time when the skies were still a frontier. The base was established in 1917, initially named Kelly Field No. 5. It was later renamed Brooks Field to honor Lieutenant Sidney Brooks Jr., a daring San Antonio aviator who tragically lost his life during a solo training flight. Sidney Brooks, a true pioneer, became the namesake of this vibrant hub. Brooks, a place where dreams soared. The base was a hotbed of innovation, with engineers developing advanced instruments and medical technologies. And that moment in history, November 21, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy dedicated the School of Aerospace Medicine, a moment forever etched in time. The base hummed with activity, it was a symbol of national defense, a place where heroes were forged. Imagine the roar of engines, the precision of drill, the spirit of service. The ground beneath your feet whispers stories of the past. But then, a shift. In 1995, the base was placed on the BRAC list. The military operations ceased, and San Antonio leaders were faced with a difficult decision. The city, state, and military joined hands to create a new vision, a place where dreams would soar in a different way. In 2002, Brooks Air Force Base transformed into Brooks City-Base, a dynamic community built upon the foundation of the past. The name Brooks, a beacon of progress. Today, you see the legacy of that foresight. A flourishing mixed-use community, buzzing with businesses, residents, and students. The old barracks have been reinvented as apartments, and the oldest wooden airplane hangar, Hangar 9, is now a popular event venue. And The Greenline, a sprawling park that connects to the San Antonio River Mission Reach, breathes life into the community. Brooks, a place where history meets the future, a place where the past inspires the present, a place where dreams take flight once again. This is Brooks, a story of transformation.
