Didn’t Uddingston East railway station used to be a bustling hub? Today we stand where echoes of railway history linger. Uddingston East, once a vital stop, now stands as a silent testament to changing times. It reflects Uddingston’s story. Uddingston is a town in South Lanarkshire. It lies on the north side of the River Clyde. It is seven miles southeast of Glasgow.

Uddingston itself has grown from a small village. In the late 18th century its population was under three hundred. Most villagers farmed or wove. The village then grew in the 19th century. Coal mining expanded with new technologies. Miners came to the area and lived in Tannochside and Thorniewood.

Uddingston’s facilities grew. It became home to Tunnock’s confectionery factory. This factory is famed for its caramel wafers and tea cakes. The factory boosts the village’s economy. An industrial estate also appeared on Bellshill Road. Coal mining was once a major industry.

Uddingston has three supermarkets and traditional shops. There are also restaurants and pubs. Sports clubs include gyms, cricket, hockey, rugby and more. The Glasgow Zoo was also located here, opening in 1947. It closed in 2003 due to financial problems.

Uddingston railway station serves the town. Trains run frequently on the Argyle and Shotts Lines. The Uddingston Viaduct is a Category A listed structure. It dates back to the late 19th century. The station provides access to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The M74 motorway runs to the north and east of Uddingston. Junctions provide access to other motorways. This has separated Uddingston from northern settlements. The motorway became an administrative border.

Uddingston has primary and secondary schools. Uddingston Grammar School was founded in 1884. It moved to a new campus in 2009.

Many notable people have lived in Uddingston. These include footballers like Jimmy Johnstone. James W. Black, a Nobel Prize winner, was born here. Barry Burns, a musician, also comes from Uddingston. Uddingston East railway station is part of this rich history.
