Gazing across the landscape from Eduardshöhe, one can almost feel the history breathing. Eduardshöhe may not be as famous as Schauinsland, but it offers a unique charm. Its quiet, almost traffic-free roads wind through picturesque meadows and pastures. This tranquil setting makes it a hidden gem near Freiburg.

Eduardshöhe offers a rewarding climb for those seeking a scenic and less crowded alternative to the popular Geiersnest route. You can access Eduardshöhe from two points. On the north side, the turnoff is near Gasthaus Buckhof. On the south side, you’ll find the turnoff at the start of the flat section in Geiersnest hamlet. From the Buckhof side, instead of taking the sharp right onto Eckhofweg towards Geiersnest, continue straight. The initial stretch is flat before the climb begins, ascending through meadows and pastures on a narrow, winding road. The highest point is further along, near Sankt Ulrich, at the edge of the forest. From the Geiersnest side, the Eduardshöhe turnoff is marked with a sign for Kaltwasser. This single-track road climbs steeply, mostly through meadows and pastures, with a short section through the forest. The ascent becomes gentler after Berglusthaus. The highest point is reached just after a second short forest passage. From there, the road descends slightly to the Eduardshöhe viewpoint.

Interestingly, Eduardshöhe is not just a viewpoint, but a less-traveled pass. It offers a quieter cycling experience compared to the bustling Hexental. Though Hexental has a dedicated cycle path, it’s often heavily trafficked. Eduardshöhe stands as a welcome respite for cyclists looking for a more peaceful ride. The views are as stunning as those from Geiersnest, and the extra elevation adds an element of challenge. Whether you’re a cyclist or simply seeking a serene escape, Eduardshöhe promises a unique experience in the beautiful countryside surrounding Freiburg.
