“It seems like Porta Monforte has faded from the map, right?” Porta Monforte was once a gateway to Milan, a point of entry and exit, a place of bustling activity. Now, it’s just a memory in the mind’s eye, a whispered name in a history book. Porta Monforte may not be a place of grand buildings or famous structures like other historic city gates, but its story is woven into the tapestry of Milan’s past. It was built towards the end of the 19th century, a time when Milan was undergoing significant growth and modernization. This gate served as a customs office, a place where goods were inspected and taxes levied. The tax booths, designed by Luigi Tormenti, were completed in 1889. The aim was to ease the traffic jam of the neighboring gates. Its existence, however, was short-lived. The gate was demolished sometime in the 20th century. Today, all that remains of Porta Monforte is the Piazza del Tricolore, named after the Italian flag which hangs from the nearby Palazzo di Giustizia. A street carries the name Porta Monforte today, but it’s not the original one. It was the name of a medieval gate, a reminder that this area of Milan has always been a place of passage. The piazza stands as a reminder of a city in transition, a time when Milan was redefining itself, embracing the future while preserving its historical roots. Standing here today, you can almost picture the gate standing tall, a sentinel of the past.
