The year is 1967. A group of passionate physicists, led by the visionary Professor Dr. Numan Zengin, gather in Ankara with a dream. They envision a future where the mysteries of the universe are unlocked and applied to solve real-world problems. This vision led to the establishment of the Hacettepe Physics Institute, the precursor to what we know today as the Fizik Mühendisliği. The Fizik Mühendisliği, or Physics Engineering Department, at Hacettepe University, stands as a testament to their ambition. Initially, the institute housed two distinct programs. One focused on a Master of Science in Physics Engineering, a field emphasizing experimental and applied studies. This program, deeply rooted in the belief that physics drives the creation of new engineering fields, drew inspiration from the existing physics engineering education at Ankara University’s Faculty of Science. The second program, a Master of Science in Physics, aimed to nurture the next generation of researchers for universities. The institute’s impact resonated throughout Turkey’s academic landscape. However, a shift occurred in 1982 with new higher education regulations. The Fizik Mühendisliği was integrated into the Faculty of Engineering, marking a significant step in its journey. Today, the department thrives with PhD, Master of Science, and Bachelor of Science programs. Over the years, it has proudly awarded over 1100 Bachelor’s degrees, 200 Master’s degrees, and 80 PhDs. Graduates of the Fizik Mühendisliği are highly sought-after. They’re recognized for their unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, contributing significantly to research, development, and technological advancements across various industries.
