Did you ever hear of a synagogue born from a break-in? Right here stands Congregation Shaaray Tefila, a testament to a dramatic chapter in New York City’s Jewish history. Congregation Shaaray Tefila’s story begins in 1845. It emerged from a power struggle within B’nai Jeshurun, another synagogue. One faction, locked out of their own temple, took matters into their own hands. They literally broke into the building, a dramatic act that led to the formation of Shaaray Tefila. The congregation’s first home was a modest building on Wooster Street. It cost $50,000, a substantial sum in those days. Shaaray Tefila’s first rabbi was Samuel Isaacs, a rarity at the time. He was one of the few English-speaking rabbis in the United States. Isaacs was a staunch believer in Orthodox Judaism. His funeral in 1878, held at Congregation Shaaray Tefila, was a significant event. It was the largest Jewish funeral of the 19th century. As the Jewish community migrated uptown, so did Congregation Shaaray Tefila. They held services in various locations. These included the old armory at the Herald Building, a grand Byzantine Mooresque style synagogue on West 44th Street, and finally, a neo-Classical structure on West 82nd Street. This West 82nd Street location became known as the West End Synagogue. The congregation even worshipped at Carnegie Hall for a time. This was before settling into their current home. In 1959, Congregation Shaaray Tefila found its permanent home here, on the corner of East 79th Street and 2nd Avenue. This building has a unique past. It once housed the Colony movie theatre, later a Trans-Lux. The theatre’s shell was ingeniously transformed into the sanctuary you see today. Congregation Shaaray Tefila’s journey reflects the evolving landscape of Jewish life in New York City. From Orthodox beginnings, the congregation embraced Reform Judaism. It has served the community for over 175 years. It offers a nursery school, a religious school, and a variety of programs for all ages. Congregation Shaaray Tefila stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring spirit of community.
