Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Here at the Lady of Deliverance Church-Byblos you can. This beautiful Greek Orthodox church stands as a silent witness to centuries of faith and resilience. It overlooks Byblos’ ancient medieval port. Its history is rich and layered.

The Lady of Deliverance Church-Byblos isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Byblos. The church itself has a rectangular plan. It measures 880 meters wide and 24 meters long. It’s seven meters high. Notice the three groin vaults that cover its solitary nave. The apse is more recent perhaps dating to around 1804. That’s about the time the Baz family built the nearby St Takla Chapel. It features a similar stone arrangement. Did you see the small arch over the apse’s niche?

The church’s altar is slightly off-center. This suggests it was added later. Look closely at the supporting walls of the nave. They contain four square buttresses. Notice how they are wider at the top than in the middle. The southwest buttress is particularly interesting. It’s hollowed out at the top. This allowed access to the roof terrace. The terrace has a clay surface.

Between the buttresses are medieval loophole windows. There are also more recent rectangular windows. The church is surrounded by a garden. At one time this garden held a small cemetery. The garden quietly surrounds the church. It provides a peaceful setting for contemplation.

Imagine the countless prayers whispered within these walls. Imagine the generations of worshippers who have sought solace and strength here. The Lady of Deliverance Church-Byblos is more than a place of worship. It’s a symbol of hope. It’s a reminder that faith can endure even in the face of adversity. Its enduring presence speaks volumes about the community it serves. It stands as a beacon of faith in the heart of this ancient city. The Lady of Deliverance Church-Byblos quietly continues its service. It welcomes all those who seek spiritual solace and connection.
