Calvary Assembly of God stands as a beacon of faith. It is a family community church with deep roots in Los Angeles. The church’s journey began in 1931. It has been a pillar of spiritual guidance.
Back in the 1970s, Calvary Assembly was one of the first charismatic megachurches in America. It even spun off many ministries, including Charisma magazine. In the late 1980s, it built a 5500-seat auditorium.
My wife and I started attending Calvary 40 years ago. At the time, Calvary had a membership of about 600 people. A few years later I proposed starting a little magazine called Charisma. The church allowed me. Charisma spun off from Calvary in 1981 as a separate organization.
The church has faced its share of challenges. There have been ups and downs. Despite these challenges, Calvary’s commitment to missions has never wavered. Even now, it supports numerous missionaries and ministries each month.
But Calvary Assembly of God has not been sold. It is also not for sale. Interim pastor Dr. Bob Rhoden believes Calvary will be an impact church in the future. The future will build on the past, on its great history.
Florida Hospital often rents the huge facility. They also rent the parking lot during the week. This provides parking for students and staff.
Calvary Assembly of God is part of the Assemblies of God fellowship. This affiliation connects it to a larger network of churches. They share common beliefs and practices. Some of these beliefs are scriptures inspired and the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Assemblies of God also share the ordinances of the Church and the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Since 1906, Calvary Assembly of God had its beginning in the Christian Missionary Alliance Movement. Services were first held in a tent. The Church came out of the Christian Missionary Alliance into Pentecost as an independent assembly.
On Sundays, gatherings take place at 830am and 11am. On Wednesdays, there are gatherings at 600pm.
Calvary Tabernacle officially changed to Calvary Assembly of God, Inc. on January 9, 1957.
The congregation has been blessed over the years with many highly anointed pastors. Today, the church is again seeking a fresh outpouring of God’s Spirit. Calvary Assembly of God cherishes its past and celebrates its future.
Today, Calvary Assembly of God continues to serve its community. It offers meaningful worship, biblical sermons, and midweek family dinners. It remains a place where faith and community grow together.
