What secrets lie buried beneath our feet? Here at the Imam Gazzoliy Mosque, layers of history intertwine, whispering tales of ancient rituals, bustling marketplaces, and enduring faith. The Imam Gazzoliy Mosque stands as a testament to Bukhara’s rich and layered past. It’s one of the oldest surviving mosques in Central Asia, a beacon that even the Mongols couldn’t extinguish. Originally, this site housed a pit called “Magok” and a vibrant bazaar where merchants traded spices and herbs, giving it the name “Attar,” meaning “scent merchant.” This pre-Islamic history is woven into the very fabric of the mosque. Imagine the air thick with the aroma of exotic spices, the clamor of bartering merchants, and the rituals of a Zoroastrian fire temple that once stood here. The mosque itself has been reborn time and again. In the 12th and 13th centuries, it underwent significant reconstruction, including the creation of the lower portal. Over time, the city’s cultural layers literally buried the mosque, submerging it in a pit. By the 16th century, a new entrance portal had to be built 4.5 meters higher than the original to keep pace with the rising ground level. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the Imam Gazzoliy Mosque was finally unearthed and renovated, revealing its hidden beauty. The mosque’s architecture reflects this layered history. The lower portal, with its slightly asymmetrical design and intricate geometric patterns carved from brick tiles, speaks to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Two octagonal drums topped with domes frame the portal, adding a touch of elegance. Inside, the rectangular structure, measuring 12 by 7.5 meters, holds a treasure trove of history. Today, the Imam Gazzoliy Mosque houses a carpet museum, its ancient walls now echoing with the quiet whispers of woven artistry. The mosque’s survival is a testament to its importance. In the 16th century, it faced demolition by the Bukharian governor, Abdulaziz Khan. Only the intervention of Sheikh Makhmudi Azam, leader of the Sufi Nakshbandi order, saved it from destruction. As you stand before the Imam Gazzoliy Mosque, remember that you’re not just looking at a building. You are witnessing the resilience of faith, the echoes of commerce, and the enduring power of history, all woven into a single, breathtaking tapestry.
