Opened in the summer semester of 2014, the Lehr- und Lernzentrum (LLZ) of the University of Duisburg-Essen’s Medical Faculty pulsates with activity. The LLZ is a hub of modern medical education, located on the Essen University Hospital campus. Up to 700 medical students, out of over 1,800, use this facility daily. The Lehr- und Lernzentrum brings together various innovative teaching and learning concepts under one roof. In 2016, the Deichmann Auditorium, seminar rooms, and Skills Labs saw over 24,300 hours of use. While 80% of the events held here catered to medical students, the Lehr- und Lernzentrum also serves as a popular venue for congresses. Even prominent figures like the NRW Science Minister, Federal Minister of Education, Federal Minister of Health, and even a future Federal President have visited this impressive center. The LLZ is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the university’s commitment to modern medical education. The popularity of the Lehr- und Lernzentrum speaks volumes, with students spending nearly 7,000 hours in 2016 alone, reinforcing their studies in the learning groups. However, the LLZ’s success has brought its own set of challenges. The current capacity is struggling to meet demand, highlighting the need for expansion. Plans are already underway for a new lecture hall complex and an expansion of the Institute Group 1. These additions will not only create much-needed space but also pave the way for central electronic exams and innovative teaching methods using tablets. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia recognized this need and granted an additional 5.7 million euros to support medical education at the University of Duisburg-Essen. This funding has enabled the medical faculty to implement a plan for renovating existing teaching infrastructure and creating additional spaces with state-of-the-art equipment.
