Picture this a thriving neighborhood built on hope and resilience. Welcome to Annapolis Park. Right here in what is now Westland Michigan stands a testament to the strength of a community. This isn’t just a collection of houses. It’s a story etched in brick and mortar. A story of overcoming adversity.

During the 1950s many white families moved to the suburbs. African American families sought the same opportunities. They faced significant obstacles. Restrictive covenants made homeownership difficult. Securing bank loans was nearly impossible. This is where Annapolis Park’s unique history begins.

In 1953 Julius Schwartz and his partners had a vision. They would build a suburb for African Americans. They established their own mortgage company the Franklin Mortgage Company. This ensured access to loans for the residents. They built more than just houses. They built a community a haven.

The first two houses were built in 1953. Over the next few years hundreds more followed. By 1957 the subdivision was complete. Many original homeowners were World War II veterans. They used the GI Bill to purchase their homes. Word of mouth and the efforts of dedicated salesmen spread the word. People like Jimmy Nelms the first African American male school teacher in the Wayne school system helped boost sales. So did Levi Jackson a former Yale football captain.

Annapolis Park wasn’t merely a solution to a housing shortage. It symbolized a determined spirit. It showcased the power of collective action. In 1955 residents formed the Southeast Homeowners Association. This fostered community unity and pride. When Westland incorporated in 1966 Annapolis Park became a part of it.

Today Annapolis Park remains an attractive well-cared for neighborhood. Many descendants of the original homeowners still live here. The curved streets the uniform ranch houses the surviving maples all tell a story. A story of hope perseverance and the enduring legacy of a community built on dreams. It’s more than just a historic district. It’s a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and progress. It’s a place where history is not only preserved but actively lived.
