Ever wondered where faith and community intertwine in Richmond Hill, Georgia? Here at Bethel Baptist Church, history and devotion blend into a welcoming embrace.

Bethel Baptist Church’s story began with a heartfelt need. In January 1976, a group of believers started meeting. They yearned for a Bible-believing Baptist church. Rev J. Carswell Milligan led them.

For 18 months, the group gathered without formal organization. Then, in March 1977, Rev. Milligan stepped down. But the vision didn’t fade.

In June 1977, Bible Baptist Church in Savannah stepped in. Dr. Cecil Hodges, its pastor, agreed to sponsor the Richmond Hill group. An organizational meeting followed. William N. Sheppard was called as pastor. The church adopted its constitution. It became a New Testament Baptist Church with about 35 members.

Bro. Sheppard served until July 1981. During his tenure, the church grew. Average attendance reached 75. Bethel started supporting Independent Baptist missionaries.

October 1981 marked a new chapter. Carlton Cooper from Augusta, Georgia became pastor. He began his ministry on November 1, 1981.

Pastor Cooper and his wife Lynette dedicated themselves to Bethel. For thirty-three and a half years, he faithfully led. The church thrived under his guidance. It matured within the Richmond Hill community.

Sadly, Pastor Carlton Cooper passed away on July 29, 2015. His legacy remained strong.

In November 2015, Bethel called Brian Cooper, Carlton’s son, as the next pastor. Brian accepted the call and arrived on January 27, 2016. He continues to lead Bethel with his wife, Eja, and their four children.

Bethel Baptist Church has experienced substantial growth. Before Covid, Sunday mornings saw an average of 275 to 300 attendees. The church actively supports 100 missions projects. Over two million dollars have been donated to worldwide missions through Faith Promise Missions giving. Bethel has also nurtured many members who entered full-time Christian ministry. They serve as church planters, pastors, and missionaries.

Today, Bethel Baptist Church remains committed to its foundation. It stands as a beacon of faith in the community and beyond. It continues to follow the bible and spread it’s word.

Bethel Baptist Church extends an invitation. Discover God’s purpose for your life. Join the services. Sunday School begins at 9:30 am. Sunday Morning Worship starts at 10:30 am. Sunday Evening Worship is at 5 pm. Wednesday Evening Prayer Meeting commences at 7 pm.

As you leave Bethel Baptist Church, remember its enduring spirit. It is a place where faith, community, and service come together. This is a place where everyone is welcome to worship.
