Is this where the spirit of faith took root? Here at the First Methodist Church of Dayton Plaque, we uncover a story of resilience and unwavering belief. The plaque marks a congregation that has thrived for over a century and a half, its roots intertwining with the very founding of Dayton. The First Methodist Church of Dayton story begins in 1855, in a time when West Liberty, later known as Dayton, was still finding its footing. Methodist services, imbued with the spirit of early settlers, echoed in the humble dwellings. By 1900, the congregation had grown, with Reverend G.T. Newberry leading the services in the Dayton schoolhouse on North Main Street. Imagine the scene: wooden desks replaced with makeshift pews, the air thick with hope and hymns. It wouldn’t be long until the congregation built its first sanctuary in 1906, a one-story wooden structure adorned with a charming bell tower. Its walls witnessed decades of growth, joy, and spiritual solace until 1928. As Dayton expanded, so did the First Methodist Church. A new, grand two-story brick structure, complete with a basement, rose on the northwest corner of Houston Avenue and Cleveland Street. This served as a testament to the congregation’s enduring spirit, finally replaced in 1980 with an even grander sanctuary that stands today. However, the story doesn’t end there. In 1968, a denominational merger led to the renaming of this steadfast pillar of faith to the First United Methodist Church. This simple plaque reminds us that faith, much like a community, is a living, evolving entity. It adapts and changes but remains a constant source of comfort and inspiration for generations.
