Deep within the Ashanti Region, nestled between Kumasi and Nkawie, lies the Afari Military Hospital. This isn’t just any hospital. It’s a story of ambition, delays, and the unwavering pursuit of quality healthcare. The Afari Military Hospital was conceived as a beacon of hope, a 500-bed facility meant to serve as a referral center and provide primary healthcare. The project, initially slated for Sofoline, Kumasi, began its journey in 2008 with a contract between the Ghanaian government and Euroget De-Invest. The location shifted from Tamale to Accra before finally settling in Afari. Construction commenced in 2014, with a projected completion date of 2018. However, the path to completion has been riddled with obstacles. The project faced years of delays, pushing the opening date further and further into the future. In 2021, the then Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, assured the public that the Afari Military Hospital would be operational by April of that year. Yet, time continued to slip by. A visit by Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah in February 2025 revealed a hospital still awaiting its grand opening. He expressed concern over the six-year delay, emphasizing the government’s commitment to finishing the project. This visit sparked a meeting with the contractors, where all outstanding issues were brought to the table to finalize the hospital’s completion. The Afari Military Hospital represents more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the dedication of those who envisioned it and a symbol of hope for the community it’s meant to serve. While the journey has been long and winding, the Afari Military Hospital stands poised to fulfill its promise of providing top-notch healthcare to the people of the Ashanti Region and beyond.
