In 1910, a new chapter began in Russian aviation history at the Officers’ Aeronautical School. The school’s creation was a direct response to the burgeoning field of aviation. The need for skilled pilots became evident. The Officers’ Aeronautical School was established to meet this demand. Initially located at Volkovo Field, the school moved to Gatchina in 1911. General-Major A.M. Kovanko, a champion of aviation, played a key role. He didn’t just lead the school. Kovanko instilled a passion for flight in his students. By 1912, the school boasted a fleet of diverse aircraft. These included the Lebed, Yastreb, and Albatross. The Farman, with its wingspan of 600 meters, became renowned for long-distance flights. The school also housed workshops and a laboratory, and two aerodromes. One was in Gatchina, and the other at Volkovo Field. Training was rigorous. The school quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Fifteen pilots graduated in 1911. Twenty more joined their ranks in 1912. This included future aviation heroes such as M.S. Babushkin, G.G. Gorshkov, and E.N. Kruten. The Officers’ Aeronautical School continued to grow and adapt to the rapidly advancing world of aviation. The school’s contribution to Russian aviation history was profound. Its graduates became pioneers in both military and civilian aviation.
