Why did Abdullakhan II commission such a grand mosque? We stand before the Kukaldosh Mosque, part of the Lyabi Hauz ensemble. Kukaldosh Mosque, built in 1569, wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a symbol of Abdullakhan II’s powerful reign. It was named after Kulbaba Kukeltash, a respected official and philanthropist. Kukaldosh Mosque is immense. At 80 by 60 meters, it’s one of Bukhara’s largest madrasahs. The design follows the traditional eastern boarding school style, with over 160 rooms across two floors surrounding a central courtyard. The facades are adorned with vibrant majolica tiles. The main facade, facing Lyabi Hauz, features a vestibule, the mosque itself, and a study room. Look closely at the two best-preserved rooms. Their domed ceilings are a marvel of architecture. Admire the intricate entrance door, a masterpiece of Bukhara woodcarving. Its surface is covered with a delicate network of ten-ray stars. In the late 19th century, the renowned Central Asian writer, Sadriddin Aini, studied at Kukaldosh Madrasah. The Kukaldosh Mosque embodies Bukhara’s architectural style, its restrained nobility, and its synthesis of artistic forms. It stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
