In 1896, a pivotal figure in Uzbekistan’s history was born within these very walls of the Fayzulla Khodjaev house museum. Fayzulla Khodjaev, son of a wealthy Bukharan merchant, entered a world of privilege in this grand house built in 1891. The Fayzulla Khodjaev house museum stands as a testament to the opulent lifestyle of the era and the tumultuous journey of its most famous resident. The house, nestled in the Gozien quarter of Bukhara, exudes the architectural splendor of the late 19th century. It’s a short walk from Bukhara’s main attractions, inviting you to wander through the labyrinthine old town streets to reach it. This area was once home to the city’s elite, palace aristocracy, and affluent families. Fayzulla Khodjaev’s father, Ubaidullah, ensured his son received a top-tier education, even sending him to Russia to study. Upon his return to Bukhara in 1913, Fayzulla quickly became involved in the Jadid movement and later became a leader of the Young Bukharans. This group challenged the Emir of Bukhara’s oppressive rule. Alongside his colleague, A. Fitrat, Fayzulla organized demonstrations, advocating for a new constitution and reforms to improve the lives of the Bukharan people. His activism highlighted the growing discontent with the existing power structure. Following the Soviet Union’s expansion into Central Asia, Fayzulla played a role in regional governance. Tragically, he fell victim to Stalin’s Great Purge and was executed in 1938. However, his legacy has since been officially rehabilitated. The Fayzulla Khodjaev house museum offers a glimpse into his life and the times he lived in. The house, later used as a school, has undergone meticulous restoration. The vibrant frescoes, intricate latticework, and uniquely carved elm ceiling beams have all been returned to their original glory. The house, divided into male and female halves, features a large reception room, summer and winter rooms, and a beautifully restored harem. The walls, once covered in clay during the Soviet era to protect the ornate ganch ornamentation, now shine again. They display photographs, including images of Bukhara after the 1920 Soviet attack and the proclamation of the Bukharan People’s Republic. Established in 1996, the museum within the house commemorates Fayzulla Khodjaev’s life. Archival photos and newspapers document the Red Army’s arrival, Khodjaev’s rise and fall, and even his Moscow show trial. Though his wife perished in Siberian exile, his grandson lives on in Tashkent. The Fayzulla Khodjaev house museum remains a powerful reminder of a turbulent period in Uzbekistan’s history.
