“A partnership born from a shared dream” whispers the wind rustling through the trees near University Neighborhood Partner Hartland. This isn’t just a building. It’s the heart of a remarkable story.
University Neighborhood Partner Hartland wasn’t always here. Its story begins in 2001. A visionary leader saw a need for greater connection between the University of Utah and Salt Lake City’s west side communities. Irene Fisher became the catalyst. She spent nine months listening to over 250 residents. She heard their hopes their dreams their concerns.
Four critical priorities emerged from these conversations. The community needed help with housing job training small business development health and environmental issues. They needed better educational and employment opportunities for young people. They wanted stronger resident leadership. Most importantly they needed to overcome barriers of mistrust and conflict. These were the seeds from which University Neighborhood Partner Hartland would grow.
In 2004 a small three-bedroom apartment in the Hartland Apartments became the first UNP Hartland Partnership Center. A humble beginning. It offered a space for collaboration and learning. But the community’s needs were outgrowing that small space.
Ten years later in 2012 a 10000 square foot building was opened right next door. This new UNP Hartland Partnership Center could now host many more residents partners and community events. The expansion demonstrates the growing success of this initiative. The commitment of the University of Utah and various funders was essential to make this happen. Salt Lake City also contributed by providing a lease for the original location at no cost for ten years.
The Hartland Partnership Center is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the University of Utah’s commitment to its surrounding communities. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement. Its success is a story of how listening and partnership can transform a neighborhood.
