In 1956, amidst the blossoming gardens of Wandsbek, Sankt Stephan church opened its doors. Bishop Wilhelm Halfmann consecrated the newly built church, a beacon of faith in Hamburg’s vibrant landscape. Sankt Stephan isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the community’s spirit. The church, designed by Horst Fischer, features a classic rectangular layout. Two welcoming entryway alcoves embrace visitors at the western end. One leads to the main entrance and the other to the serene baptismal chapel. Inside, Sankt Stephan’s hall-like design invites reflection. More than 300 souls can find solace within its walls. The interior, free from supporting pillars, allows the eye to be drawn to a grand oak cross on the eastern wall. A colorful circular window on the west wall depicts angels making music, a scene inspired by the Book of Revelation. The other windows, bathed in simple hues, provide a tranquil backdrop. The artist Siegfried Assmann’s work fills the church with a unique spiritual presence. He carved the large cross, the oak pulpit, and the figures of the apostles. Assmann also designed the vibrant west window, the baptismal font, and the relief within the baptismal chapel. Above the entrance, a mosaic depicts the stoning of St. Stephen. This outdoor artwork, also Assmann’s creation, is a striking reminder of the church’s namesake. Even the altar’s placement is unconventional. It sits slightly off-center beneath the cross, alongside the pulpit. The original bells of Sankt Stephan have a fascinating history. They were salvaged from Preetz’s town church and housed temporarily in a steel framework. Once the distinctive tower was added in 1962, the bells found their permanent home. Later, in 1977, three bronze bells from the Heidelberg bell foundry replaced them. One of the original bells found a new purpose in Friedland, while another, sadly damaged, was melted down. Sankt Stephan is not only a place of worship, but also a haven for music. The renowned Kantorei choir, formed in 1959, has performed challenging and beautiful church music. A children’s music theatre began in 1983. And since 1972, a well-known brass band calls Sankt Stephan home. The church is also proud to host the “Quartett Mozart” men’s choir. This award-winning choir, recognized with both the Zelter Plaque and the Wandsbek Culture Prize, contributes to the rich tapestry of Sankt Stephan’s musical legacy. The church’s 18-register Walcker organ, from 1958, underwent renovations by Rudolf von Beckerath between 1995 and 1997. Today, it continues to fill Sankt Stephan with uplifting music.
