Saint Albans Baptist Church opened its doors in 1956. It started as a small mission church. Rev Dr J Oscar Jones led the way. He had a vision. He wanted a new home for his growing congregation. He purchased a building. It was once a white congregation’s church. Saint Albans Baptist Church became the first Black church in the area. This was a significant moment. A milestone in the community’s history.
The first services were held on New Year’s Eve 1956. Only seven people were present. Imagine the dedication. Imagine the faith it took to start anew. By January 1957 two more families joined. The church began to grow. This was only the beginning. The church’s growth was remarkable.
Under Dr Jones’ leadership Saint Albans flourished. New ministries emerged. The Board of Deacons. The Board of Trustees. The Missionary Circle. The Usher Board and the Celestial Choir. All these served to strengthen the community’s bond.
Dr Jones passed away in 1970. The church continued his legacy. Rev Mitchell R Oleavia became the second pastor. He served for twelve years. He expanded the church’s ministries. He added the Helping Hand. The Busy Bees. The Busy Bees Children’s Choir. He also secured a federally funded lunch program for the church and the community.
Rev Dr Curtis T Harding Jr took over in 1984. He had an ambitious goal. He wanted to build a new church. It took faith. It took determination. And it took incredible fundraising. The congregation raised over half a million dollars. Deacons even mortgaged their homes. This dedication made the new church building a reality. The cornerstone was laid in 1994. A symbol of their unwavering commitment to their faith.
