Before you stands Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie a place steeped in history and artistry. This isn’t just any church. It’s a treasure chest of Renaissance marvels.

The story begins in 1463. Francesco I Sforza the Duke of Milan ordered its construction. He wanted a Dominican convent and church. This replaced a smaller chapel dedicated to St Mary of the Graces. The renowned architect Guiniforte Solari designed the Gothic nave. It was completed in 1469.

But the tale doesn’t end there. Decades later Duke Ludovico Sforza stepped in. He envisioned Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie as the Sforza family’s burial site. He rebuilt the cloister and apse. His wife Beatrice was buried there in 1497. The apse’s design is attributed to the master Donato Bramante. Although some dispute his involvement.

Imagine the bustling activity. Master artisans worked tirelessly. The scent of fresh plaster and paint hung in the air. The sounds of hammers chiseling stone echoed through the courtyard.

Sadly this beautiful church was not immune to tragedy. During World War II an Allied bombing raid struck. Much of the refectory was destroyed. Miraculously Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper survived. It had been protected by sandbags.

The Last Supper isn’t the only artwork Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie boasts. Titian’s altarpiece depicting Christ receiving the crown of thorns once adorned the Chapel of the Holy Crown. French troops looted it in 1797. Now it resides in the Louvre Museum. Frescoes by Gaudenzio Ferrari and Bramantino further enrich this church’s interior.

Today Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie is more than a place of worship. It’s a vibrant cultural center. The Old Sacristy designed by Bramante houses a Dominican Cultural Centre. It hosts conferences concerts and art exhibitions. It’s a living testament to Milan’s rich heritage a blend of faith art and history. A legacy that continues to inspire awe. Step inside. Let the beauty of Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie envelop you.
