Dreaming of a grand chapel, perhaps? Well, let me tell you about the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception. It stands here not as the first house of worship on this site but as a successor.

Originally, a modest chapel named Sainte-Elisabeth graced this location. This humble chapel dates back to the early 17th century. Imagine it a small and simple space for quiet prayer.

But as time passed the parishioners of Haut-Pont desired a grander church. As early as 1825, they began requesting a new and larger edifice. However, the project didn’t materialize until a generation later.

Enter Charles Leroy a local architect from Lille. He provided the plans for the new Église de l’Immaculée-Conception. The construction work was undertaken by the Loriaux company from Saint-Omer. The first stone was laid on October 4, 1854.

Five years later, on October 8, 1859, the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception was inaugurated. Yet, it wasn’t entirely complete. A temporary wooden bell tower was added in 1865. The bells themselves followed shortly after, in 1866 and 1868. The interior decoration took even longer. It wasn’t finished until 1872 with the painting and 1879 with the furniture.

Already by 1887, the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception was declared to be in poor condition. Then came the First World War. In 1917 a bombardment struck the building. Restoration work took place between 1921 and 1925 to repair the damages.

But the wooden bell tower added in 1865 had its days numbered. It eventually fell in 1929. In 1935, a new spire was erected. This time, it was made of metal framework from local foundries. This is the spire you see today.

Now let’s talk about the name, Église de l’Immaculée-Conception. The Immaculate Conception refers to a central belief in the Catholic faith. It states that Mary, the mother of Jesus was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception.

The dogma was officially promulgated by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854. This declaration occurred just before the construction of this very church began. However, the message extends beyond Mary alone. As baptized members of the Church, each person has the opportunity to live without sin.

So here stands the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception, a testament to faith, perseverance and architectural evolution. It replaced a smaller chapel and survived war damage. Its current metal spire stands as a symbol of resilience and faith. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Remember that this church is not just a building. It is a story etched in stone and metal.
