From its humble beginnings as Talat Khwan Mueang Nonthaburi District has a rich history. This bustling district sits on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. It played a crucial role in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Simon de la Loubère a French envoy even noted its importance.

Mueang Nonthaburi District wasn’t always known by its current name. It was originally called Talat Khwan. This name reflects its historical significance as a vibrant marketplace. The district’s name changed in 1917. This happened when Nonthaburi’s provincial administration relocated there. A fascinating twist occurred between 1943 and 1946. During this time Nonthaburi was briefly absorbed into Bangkok. It was then later reinstated as its own province.

Today Mueang Nonthaburi District thrives. It is home to the Department of Corrections headquarters located in Suan Yai. This fact isn’t immediately obvious but adds to the district’s multifaceted nature. The district is also environmentally significant. It supports the last natural habitat for the Alexandrine and red-breasted parakeets. These beautiful birds live in groups among the large trees of local temples like Wat Suan Yai and Wat Utthayan.

The district’s administration is another captivating aspect. It is divided into ten sub-districts. These are further divided into 32 villages. The city of Nonthaburi itself boasts a large population. It includes tambons like Suan Yai Talat Khwan Bang Khen Bang Kraso and Tha Sai. The district’s vibrant urban landscape blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
