Have you ever wondered about the history hidden within a structure? Look around you, at this latticework tower, a testament to the ingenuity of engineer Vladimir Shukhov. This is the Shukhov Water Tower, a unique landmark in the heart of Bukhara. This tower was not just any ordinary water tower, standing tall in 1929 it held a vital position in the water supply system for old Bukhara, providing water for countless thirsty souls. This striking structure was designed by Shukhov himself, and is an excellent example of his hyperboloid design. During the 1970s, the water supply system in Bukhara was changed, leading to Shukhov’s tower losing its original purpose. Sadly, the tower was left to its own devices, becoming ownerless in 1968. After years of neglect, the wooden sheathing on the top of the tower unfortunately went up in flames, the resulting damage rendered the water tank unusable. In the 1990s, a local businessman attempted to give the tower a new lease on life. They installed an elevator and converted the top of the tower into a restaurant. Unfortunately, the elevator malfunctioned, and the restaurant was forced to close its doors. The tower stood silent, a silent sentinel, until 2018 when French investments reinvigorated the tower’s future. With a modern elevator and a new name, Bukhara Tower, it reopened to the public in 2019. Today, this historic structure is a reminder of the past and a beacon of hope for the architectural heritage of Uzbekistan. You can explore the tower, taking the elevator to the observation deck to enjoy panoramic views of Bukhara and the timeless charm of this ancient city.
