St Marys Catholic Church

Gazing upon St. Mary’s Catholic Church, can you imagine its humble beginnings? It’s hard to believe this bustling hub of faith, now serving over 350,000 parishioners, started as a simple prayer hall. The story of St. Mary’s Catholic Church is a testament to Dubai’s growth and the vibrant international community that calls it home. In the 1960s, as Dubai’s oil industry boomed, so did its Catholic population. Initially, a priest from Bahrain would travel to the UAE monthly, holding services in homes. Eventually, the need for a dedicated space became clear. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, then Prime Minister, generously donated land for a church. St. Mary’s Catholic Church, initially dedicated as the Church of the Assumption, was blessed in 1967. A school soon followed, further cementing the church’s role in the community. As the congregation continued to grow, the original church was demolished in 1988. The current St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a much larger structure, was dedicated in 1989. Today, St. Mary’s is a beacon of diversity. Masses are held in a multitude of languages, reflecting the church’s diverse parishioners. You can hear everything from Arabic and English to Tagalog and Urdu echoing within its walls. St. Mary’s Catholic Church also plays a crucial role in the lives of many migrant workers, offering not just spiritual guidance, but also a sense of community in a new land.
