Time jump back to the year 587. Imagine a fierce battle raging around this very spot. This is the story of Taisai Shogunji. This temple stands as a testament to faith and victory.

Taisai Shogunji is also known as Shomyo Katsukiji. It is a temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect. People also call it “Taishi-do” or “Shimo-no-Taishi.”

Legend says that Prince Shotoku built this temple. He prayed to the Four Heavenly Kings for victory. He was battling Mononobe no Moriya. Prince Shotoku won. He then erected this temple.

The story goes that Prince Shotoku was surrounded. He faced Moriya’s superior forces. He was in grave danger. Suddenly a large katsura tree split in two. The prince hid inside. This saved his life.

After surviving, Prince Shotoku carved statues. He carved a statue of himself at age sixteen. He also carved statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. He used a white oak tree. Prince Shotoku vowed to promote peace. He wanted to honor both sides of the conflict.

Emperor Suiko recognized Prince Shotoku’s virtue. He bestowed the names Katsuragi and Taisai Shogunji. This honored the tree and the prince’s victory.

The temple houses important cultural properties. The main deity is the Nyoirin Kannon. It is a designated cultural asset. The temple also has many treasures.

Look around the grounds of Taisai Shogunji. You can see sacred trees and a stone with a horse footprint. There is also Moriya’s Pond. Legend says they washed Mononobe no Moriya’s head there.

The temple’s history is intertwined with Prince Shotoku’s faith. It reflects the rise and fall of his beliefs. Taisai Shogunji became a central place for these beliefs.

During the Kamakura period it was known as “Kawachi-no-Kuni Kongo-ji Taishi-do”. This suggests its importance as a Taishi temple. By the Muromachi period renovations were already planned.

Notice the statues of Prince Shotoku and the Four Heavenly Kings. These figures are unique. The Four Heavenly Kings represent those who contributed to the war.

Jikokuten equals Shotoku. Zochoten is identified with Hata no Kawakatsu. Komokuten is Tomi no Ichii. Tamonten is represented by Soga no Umako. These statues embody the faith of Prince Shotoku.

Taisai Shogunji is part of the Kawachi Saigoku Pilgrimage. It is the first sacred site. It is also the second site of the Prince Shotoku Pilgrimage. Moreover it is the third site of the Kawachi Hanakoyu.

Nearby you can find Mononobe Moriya’s tomb. There are also the Tumulus of the Arrow and the Tumulus of the Bow.

Taisai Shogunji stands as a reminder. It embodies Prince Shotoku’s legacy. It is a place of historical and spiritual significance. The temple continues to inspire visitors today.
