“Can you feel it? The solemn reverence that permeates this place?” We are standing before the Bildstöckl-Kapelle. It is a memorial chapel with a fascinating story.
The Bildstöckl-Kapelle isn’t in Salzburg proper. It is actually located in Bad Reichenhall, in Germany. But from here, we can see parts of Salzburg.
This chapel serves as a poignant reminder. It honors the fallen and deceased members of the Gebirgstrachtenerhaltungsverein Alt-Reichenhall. This translates to the Mountain Costume Preservation Society of Old Reichenhall.
In 1949, the members of this society erected the Bildstöckl-Kapelle. They wanted to create a lasting memorial. Alfred Nathan, an honorary citizen of Bad Reichenhall, donated to the construction.
The Bildstöckl-Kapelle sits on the Predigtstuhl. This translates to Pulpit Chair. It is 235 meters above the center of Bad Reichenhall. That is 705 meters above sea level.
Hiking trails from the Festplatz, the festival grounds, pass by the chapel. The B 21 highway also runs nearby. These paths lead up the Predigtstuhl and the adjacent mountains.
Take a moment to look around. Notice the wooden benches below the Bildstöckl-Kapelle. To the right, a platform provides space for events. Imagine the gatherings held here.
From here, the view is stunning. You can see the entire town of Bad Reichenhall. The Staufen mountain dominates the landscape. You can also see towards Piding and parts of Salzburg.
Interestingly, the Bildstöcklalm was once located near the Bildstöckl-Kapelle. This mountain pasture existed on the northern slope of the Predigtstuhl. It sat at 760 meters above sea level. Sadly, the Alm was abandoned in the late 19th century. The hut became a restaurant for hikers. But that also closed in the mid-20th century. The Almhut was completely removed and the area has since become overgrown.
The Bildstöckl-Kapelle stands as a testament to remembrance. It is a place to reflect on those who came before us. It reminds us of the importance of community. The stunning views and peaceful setting enhance its significance. Let us take a moment to appreciate this special place before continuing.
