Established in 1894 the Vedanta Society of New York holds a unique place in history. It was the first Vedanta Society founded in the West. Swami Vivekananda a renowned Indian monk established it. He had just captivated the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. He chose two humble rented rooms at 54 West 33rd Street in Manhattan. This marked the beginning of Vedanta’s journey in America.

The Society’s early years were a whirlwind of activity. Vivekananda traveled extensively. He lectured and spread his teachings. He returned to India in 1897. Another disciple Swami Abhedananda took the reins. He served as president until 1921. Abhedananda formalized the Society’s structure incorporating it under New York law.

The Vedanta Society of New York moved several times. It finally found a permanent home at 34 West 71st Street in 1921. This location remains its address. The Society has seen six presidents since its founding. Swami Tathagatananda served from 1976 until his passing. Swami Sarvapriyananda currently leads the Vedanta Society of New York.
