Could a chapel house a king’s heart? Here at Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa, it does. This church is more than just a religious site. It’s a repository of history. It is a testament to Porto’s enduring spirit.
Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa began with a dream. Brazilian priest Ângelo Sequeira preached in Porto. He sought funds to build a chapel honoring Our Lady of Lapa. By 1755, his dream materialized. Construction of the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Lapa commenced.
Two years later, ambitions grew. The board decided a bigger church was needed. Architect José Figueiredo Seixas took charge. The church’s construction spanned over a century. The French Invasions caused significant delays.
Since 1835, Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa holds a unique treasure. It safeguards the heart of King Pedro IV. The king gifted his heart to Porto. He wanted to thank the citizens for their courage during the civil war against his brother. The King’s heart rests near the main altar. It is housed in a shrine designed by Costa Lima.
But Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa is not only a church. It’s also a cultural center. In 1995, the monumental organ was installed. The organ enhances the church’s appeal. It delights concert attendees.
The Graveyard of Our Lady of Lapa is nearby. It is the oldest romantic graveyard in Portugal. It was built during cholera epidemics. In 1833, the board restricted burial to members only. Soon, Porto’s bourgeoisie built family sepulchers here. The graveyard became a display of funerary art. Famous writers rest here. Arnaldo Gama, Camilo Castelo Branco and Soares de Passos are buried here. Architects and artists like Marques da Silva and Marques de Oliveira rest here too.
Padre Ângelo Sequeira founded a school. The school’s construction took place around 1910-1915. The architect Marques da Silva designed it. The building housed the Sacristy and the Galeria da Memória. It also contained the Salão Nobre and the Irmandade schools. Some spaces are still active. Visitors can explore them.
The Venerável Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Lapa manages the church. They acquired the organ in 1991. It has 32 tons and is 15 meters high. The biggest pipe is made of wood. It measures 10.12 meters.
Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa combines Rococo and Neoclassical styles. Its construction began in 1756. It concluded in 1863. Several architects contributed to its design. These architects were João Strovel, José Figueiredo Seixas and Luís Chiari.
The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa stands as a symbol. It represents faith. It embodies artistic achievement. It is a lasting tribute to Porto’s history. As you leave this sacred space reflect on the heart it holds. Think of the king’s gratitude. Remember the community’s resilience. Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa is a place where history and art intertwine.
