What distinguished Masjid As-Shanqeeti? The answer lies not just in its structure, but in the remarkable scholar it commemorates. Muhammad Al-Ameen Ash-Shanqeeti, born in 1907 (or perhaps 1897), hailed from Mauritania. His name, “Shanqeeti,” derives from his birthplace in the Chinguetti region. Masjid As-Shanqeeti stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Born into a family of scholars, Ash-Shanqeeti’s education began at home. By age ten, he had memorized the Quran. He honed his mastery of tajweed and calligraphy with his family. He delved into Arabic grammar, prophetic history, and Arabian lineage. His thirst for knowledge led him to study with renowned scholars of his time, mastering fiqh, tafsir, hadith, and poetry. Masjid As-Shanqeeti reminds us of his dedication to learning. Ash-Shanqeeti’s influence extended beyond Mauritania. He served as a judge, his rulings respected even by rulers. In 1947, he journeyed to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. He then taught at Masjid An-Nabawi in Medina, captivating audiences with his profound understanding of the Quran. Masjid As-Shanqeeti echoes with his teachings. He was a gifted exegete, best known for his work “Adwaa-ul-Bayaan fee Tafseer-il-Qur’an bil-Qur’an.” His grasp of the Quran was so extraordinary that he could recite the preceding and succeeding verses of any given verse. This remarkable ability drew students to his lessons, including prominent figures like Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Aziz Bin Baz. After teaching in Riyadh, he returned to Medina to teach at the Islamic University. There he influenced Rab’i Al-Madkhali, the founder of the Madkhaliyyah Salafi sect. Ash-Shanqeeti’s scholarship is reflected in his numerous books. These cover a wide range of topics. His legacy is preserved within the walls of Masjid As-Shanqeeti. Ash-Shanqeeti was known for his integrity and humility. He practiced what he preached, forbidding backbiting in his presence. He prioritized the pursuit of knowledge, valuing all fields as pathways to understanding the Quran. Masjid As-Shanqeeti stands in honor of a scholar who dedicated his life to learning and teaching. In 1972 or 1973, after returning from Hajj, Shaykh Ash-Shanqeeti passed away in Mecca. He was buried in Jannat Al-Muallá, his funeral prayer held at Masjid Al-Haram. Masjid As-Shanqeeti serves as a tribute to his impactful life and profound knowledge.
