In 1965, a group of passionate amateur astronomers in Augsburg, Germany, embarked on a mission. They dreamt of sharing their love for the cosmos with the world. This marked the birth of the Astronomische Vereinigung Augsburg e. V., an association dedicated to making astronomy accessible to all. The Sternwarte Diedorf, located about ten kilometers west of Augsburg, stands as a testament to their dedication. The Sternwarte Diedorf wasn’t built overnight. As the association grew and the desire for a dedicated observatory intensified, they faced a challenge: funding. However, fate, it seemed, had other plans. When the municipality of Diedorf decided to build a new school, an opportunity arose. With the unwavering support of the community, the city of Augsburg, and generous donations, the Sternwarte Diedorf found its home atop the newly constructed Pestalozzi Grund- und Hauptschule. In 1975, the Sternwarte Diedorf opened its doors, a beacon of astronomical exploration for the public. Today, the Sternwarte Diedorf continues to inspire awe and wonder. Equipped with an array of telescopes, including a remarkable 45-centimeter Newton telescope, it offers visitors a glimpse into the depths of our universe. But the Sternwarte Diedorf is more than just telescopes and technology. It’s a place where the mysteries of the cosmos come alive, fueled by the passion of dedicated amateur astronomers.
