“Gospel for the Urban Community” is not just a slogan. It is a living mission at the N.Y. Nam Presbyterian Church. This church stands as a beacon of faith right here in New York City.
N.Y. Nam Presbyterian Church is a vibrant Korean Presbyterian megachurch. It is located in Long Island City, Queens. The church’s journey began in 1970. In 1974, it affiliated with the Korean American Presbyterian Church. It then became a member of the New York City Presbytery.
In 1999, the church erected its current building. Greg Lynn designed it. The N.Y. Nam Presbyterian Church celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010.
The church experienced some changes. In 2013, N.Y. Nam Presbyterian Church disaffiliated from the Korean American Presbyterian Church. By 2014, it affiliated with the PCA, but soon departed. That year marked a new direction. The church started outreach ministries to English and Chinese speakers.
The English Ministry formed in January 2006. It embraces a multi-lingual, multi-generational, and multi-congregational model. This reflects the biblical call to pass on faith across generations. Within the Korean-American context, this means bridging generations. It also means preparing future generations.
N.Y. Nam Presbyterian Church recognizes its location. It is in an urban city. It aims to positively impact the neighborhoods around it. These include Sunnyside, Woodside, Astoria and Long Island City. The church seeks to build relationships within the community. This creates more opportunities to share the Gospel. It also aims to point the neighborhood to Christ.
This church sees itself as a regional hub. People drive in from outside the city for worship. The church emphasizes community. Believers need to commune with God. They also need to connect with each other. Regional small groups meet weekly. They offer spiritual support and accountability. These meetings also provide chances to reach out to non-believers.
Pastor Paul S. Kim leads the English Ministry. He was born in Flushing, Queens. He grew up in the Bronx. He embodies the church’s local connection.
N.Y. Nam Presbyterian Church is more than a building. It’s a community, a mission, and a testament to faith in the heart of New York City. Its story is one of growth, adaptation, and a commitment to spreading the Gospel to all.
