Ready to explore Mandaue? Mandaue, officially the City of Mandaue, is a highly urbanized city. It is located in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. Shall we discover more about this vibrant city?

Mandaue’s story begins long ago. A community of Austronesian people flourished here. Antonio Pigafetta, a Venetian chronicler, mentioned a settlement named “Mandaui.” A chieftain called Apanoaan or Lambuzzan led this early community.

The Spanish authorities later gathered the natives into a town. Mandaue became a mission village and a bulwark for the church. Jesuits managed it in 1638. Later, the Recollects took over.

The Philippine Revolution in 1898 brought a new administration. It followed the Central Revolutionary Government’s decree. American troops overthrew this short-lived revolution. A battle nearly destroyed Mandaue in 1901. Presidente Benito Ceniza died in the conflict.

Mandaue was semi-autonomous under Spanish rule but still under Cebu’s jurisdiction. The Spaniards didn’t make it an independent municipality. Only after Presidente Ceniza’s death did this dream come true. Mandaue became an independent municipality in 1901 under American rule.

Mandaue gained complete independence on July 4, 1946. This happened along with the entire nation.

Mandaue became a chartered city on August 30, 1969. It was recognized as a highly urbanized city on February 15, 1991. In April 2019, Mandaue separated from the sixth district. Since 2022, it has had its own lone district.

Mandaue covers 34.87 square kilometers. That is about 13.46 square miles. The city has a high population density. It has 10,000 people per square kilometer.

Mandaue is known as the industrial hub of Region VII. Approximately 40 percent of Cebu’s export companies are in Mandaue. It hosts about 10,000 industrial and commercial businesses. This makes it a “little rich city.”

Many major companies have a home in Mandaue. These include San Miguel Corp and Coca-Cola Bottling Corp. Shemberg, Monde Nissin and Profood International Corp are some of the other companies here.

Mandaue also accounts for 75 percent of the country’s furniture exports. This makes it the furniture capital. Mandaue Foam, started in 1971, has 25 factories and showrooms nationwide.

Mandaue celebrates several festivals. The Mandaue Fiesta honors Saint Joseph on May 8. The Panagtagbo sa Mandaue honors the Holy Family in January. The Kabayo Festival features horse racing in February.

Mandaue offers a variety of cuisines. You can find international and local meals. Cebuano meals like lechon and sugba are very popular.

Mandaue’s road network includes national highways and city roads. Land transportation includes PUJs, buses, and tricycles. Sea transport relies on the Port of Cebu.

Mandaue has two universities. These are Cebu Doctors’ University and the University of Cebu’s Lapu-Lapu-Mandaue campus.

Mandaue has come a long way from its early beginnings. It has grown into a thriving city with a rich history. It is a center for industry, culture, and cuisine.

Mandaue continues to evolve. It balances economic progress with cultural preservation. The industrious spirit of its people drives its ongoing success. So Mandaue stands as a testament to Cebu’s vibrant spirit.
