Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae” Pantelimon

Did the scent of incense ever lead you to a place brimming with history? Right here, before Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae” Pantelimon, time whispers tales of faith and resilience. This church, dedicated to Saint Pantelimon and Saint Nicholas, holds a treasure: a relic, the right arm of Saint Pantelimon himself. The very ground we stand on was once called Obilesti, then Floresti. It was Prince Grigorie Ghica II who, in the 18th century, built a monastery and hospital on a nearby island, giving the area its current name, Pantelimon. In 1750, he brought the holy relic from Greece, a testament to his devotion. A wooden church dedicated to Saint Nicholas once stood near the monastery. Sadly, it succumbed to flames in 1880. That very year, on July 27th, construction began on the brick church we see today, Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae” Pantelimon. Its cross shape and two grand towers stand as a symbol of rebirth. It was consecrated in 1883. The relic, originally housed in the monastery, found its new home within these walls, bestowing another patron saint upon the church. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae” Pantelimon has braved the test of time. Its foundation, weakened by the terrain, has been reinforced numerous times. The years 1903, 1937, 1941, and 1977 marked significant renovations. Between 1994 and 1998, the church underwent extensive repairs and was adorned with new paintings by artists Marcel Codrescu and Dan Gogu. Patriarch Teoctist re-consecrated it in September 1998. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae” Pantelimon is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith and community. It continues to serve its people, offering not only spiritual guidance but also social support, from communal meals to educational programs for children.
