Hidden amidst Seoul’s bustling cityscape lies Bogwang-dong a neighborhood steeped in history and brimming with unexpected stories. Bogwang-dong’s name itself whispers of a rich past. It originates from State Preceptor Bogwang a figure who established a temple here during the reign of King Jinheung of Silla. Bogwang-dong’s journey through time is fascinating. In the early Joseon dynasty it was part of the Seongjeosimni area of Hansungbu. Araetdang near the Bogwang-dong Community Center honors Jangseong the prime minister of China’s Shu Han dynasty. These shrines offer glimpses into the diverse influences that have shaped Bogwang-dong’s character. Annual ancestral rites are conducted at both Utdang and Araetdang. This unique tradition serves as a living link to the past.
