Founded in 1837 the National Technical University of Athens began as a part-time vocational school. It was named the Royal School of Arts. The aim was to train craftsmen and builders. The new Greek state needed their skills. By 1840 it became a full-time technical school. The National Technical University of Athens expanded its courses. It acquired its own building on Pireos Street.

In 1843 a major restructuring occurred. The National Technical University of Athens added a Higher School of Fine Arts. This later became the School of Industrial and Fine Arts. The name Polytechnnic came in 1862. New technical courses were introduced. By 1873 the school had outgrown its facilities. The National Technical University of Athens moved to a new campus.

The new campus was on Patission Street. It was named Metsovion Polytechnion. This honored the benefactors from Metsovo. They financed the construction. The National Technical University of Athens continued to develop.

By 1887 it was partitioned into three technical schools. These were Structural Engineering Architecture and Mechanical Engineering. All offered four-year degrees. The state recognized it as a technical education facility. It adapted to the nation’s needs.

In 1914 new schools were created. It was officially named Ethnicon Metsovion Polytechnion. The Ministry of Public Works oversaw it. By 1917 the National Technical University of Athens changed form again. The School of Industrial Arts separated into several higher schools. These included Civil Engineering and Architecture.

In 1923 the National Technical University of Athens alumni formed the Technical Chamber of Greece. This organization advises the Greek state. It also licenses all practicing engineers in Greece.

In 1930 the Athens School of Fine Arts gained independence. It allowed both schools to develop separately. During the German occupation from 1941 to 1944 the National Technical University of Athens became a resistance center.

The Polytechnion Uprising of November 1973 was a turning point. Students protested against the military dictatorship. The regime sent a tank crashing through the gates. Many students died. This galvanized the Greek people. The junta fell in 1974.

The uprising is commemorated every November 17th. It symbolizes the struggle for freedom. A monument honors the victims. It reminds everyone of the sacrifices made.

Today the National Technical University of Athens has nine academic schools. Eight are for engineering. One is for applied sciences. Undergraduate studies last five years. The university has about 700 academic staff. It has about 8500 undergraduates and 1500 postgraduates. Eight schools are at the Zografou Campus. The School of Architecture remains at the Patission Complex.

The emblem shows Prometheus bringing fire to mankind. It represents technology and knowledge. The National Technical University of Athens commits to human needs. The emblem is round and black. Prometheus holds a lit torch. The name Prometheus the Fire-bringer is inscribed.

The Averof building is neoclassical. It was designed by Lysandros Kaftantzoglou. Construction finished in 1878. It housed the National Gallery and exhibitions. The Averof building was restored and modernized. It reopened in 2010. It won the Europa Nostra grand prize in 2012.

The Zografou Campus houses most schools. It covers 190 acres. It includes lecture theaters laboratories and libraries. The Central Library has over 215000 books. It also has 100000 scientific issues. The historical library contains volumes from the 17th century.

The Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park is linked to the National Technical University of Athens. It focuses on research education and business. The Metsovion Interdisciplinary Research Center protects mountainous environments.

The National Technical University of Athens offers music dancing and theatrical groups. It has sports facilities. There is an open-source student group. Foreign languages are also taught. The university participates in international organizations.
