Tucked away in Beijing’s bustling Xicheng District, Wanshou Park offers a tranquil escape. It beckons you to explore its rich history and serene beauty. Wanshou Park isn’t as famous as some of Beijing’s larger parks, like Yuyuantan or Taoranting. But it holds a special distinction as the city’s first park dedicated to the elderly. Originally built on the site of Guangdi Temple in 1617, Wanshou Park has seen many transformations over the centuries. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the park underwent extensive renovations. Trees, flowers, and grass were planted, breathing new life into the historic grounds. In 1955, its name was briefly changed to Wanshou West Park, before reverting back to Wanshou Park in 1995. More recently, in 2014, the Xicheng District government spearheaded another renovation project. This time, the focus was on preserving the existing features while enhancing its function as a place to promote filial piety and longevity. The park’s original buildings, trees, and other infrastructure were carefully preserved, while new amenities were added to meet the diverse needs of visitors. Today, Wanshou Park spans 5.1 hectares, or roughly 51,000 square meters. The landscape design emphasizes the beauty of its diverse plant life. Gingko, cherry, peony, green bamboo, and magnolia trees are just a few of the species that create a vibrant tapestry of color throughout the year. With its plant coverage reaching an impressive 92.5%, the park is a verdant oasis in the heart of the city. As you stroll along the winding paths, imagine the generations who have sought solace and inspiration within these historic grounds. From the Ming Dynasty origins to its modern role as a haven for the elderly, Wanshou Park continues to offer a place for reflection and connection with nature. The park is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. You can easily reach it by taking bus routes 40, 59, 603 Zhi, 724, or 819 and getting off at Babuqiao. Wanshou Park may be small, but it offers a unique and enriching experience for those seeking a peaceful retreat in Beijing.
