“Saileog” is the Irish name for this place. We are now standing in Silloge. This townland is located in the civil parish of Santry. It lies in the electoral division of Dubber. Coolock is the barony. This all falls within County Dublin.
Silloge may seem like just another spot on the map. Yet, it holds a unique place in the tapestry of Dublin. Silloge’s story is connected to its location. We are at 53° 24′ 47″ N latitude and 6° 16′ 39″ W longitude.
Silloge covers a certain area. It ranks as the 379th largest townland within County Dublin. Nationwide, it’s the 33451st largest that we know. There are no subtownlands recorded within Silloge. Silloge was added to OpenStreetMap on August 3, 2015. Brianh was the user who added it.
But there is more to Silloge than just its geography. It is also home to Silloge Park Public Golf Course. Dublin City Council opened a 9-hole public golf course here in 1984. It was named Silloge Park. Owen Ward designed the original course. He was from Dublin City Council’s Parks Department. Christy O’Connor Senior opened the course. He performed the first drive.
The course looked very different then. What is now the Index 1, 8th hole was the first hole. The ticket office was behind the tee box. It was on the other side of the gap in the hedge. The car park was near the yard. The present 3rd and 4th holes used to be football pitches.
In 1995, Silloge Park Public Golf Course expanded to 18 holes. A major redesign and development took place. This was due to the construction of the M50 Motorway. Only five of the original nine holes remained. Since the redevelopment, Silloge Park Public Golf Course has become very popular.
The clubhouse pavilion at Silloge Park Public Golf Course opened in 2001. The Lord Mayor of Dublin Maurice Ahern officially opened it. Golfers can now relax and enjoy light refreshments here.
The Christy O’Connor Golf Club started at Hollystown Golf Club. It moved to Silloge Golf Course later. The price of joining a golf club in Dublin became too high. The Christy O’Connor Club formed to combat this. Christy O’Connor “Himself” became President. His wife Mary was Lady President.
The course measures 5924 meters. It has a Par 71. The ladies’ course is shorter at 4899 meters. It has a Par 70.
Silloge Park Golf Club is managed by Target Golf Management. The course welcomes visitors. They can book tee times online. Golf lessons are available from a Golf Professional.
In the early days, there were four green fees. Eighteen holes cost £5 with a white ticket. Nine holes cost £3 with a pink ticket. Unemployed or retired golfers paid £2 for 18 holes with a green ticket. They paid £1 for 9 holes with a blue ticket. Green staff knew how well the economy was doing by the color of the tickets.
Silloge is more than just a name on a map. It’s a place with a history. It is a place for recreation and community. It is a place where memories are made.
