What began as a small gathering has become a beacon of faith. This is Iglesia Bautista Hispana. It stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring strength of belief.

In 1962, Pastor Leobardo Estrada Cuesta saw a need. He was a Mexican evangelist from Texas. He served as the director of Hispanic ministry in New York. Under his guidance, a small group of believers started meeting. They gathered in a space at 59th Street and Columbus Circle. This humble beginning marked the start of the first Hispanic-American Southern Baptist mission in New York City.

The Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Manhattan officially formed on July 26, 1964. A few years later, in February 1969, the congregation moved. Their new home was at 96 Wadsworth Avenue on 178th Street in Washington Heights. This building, originally built in 1922, was designed by Nathaniel Vickers in the Baroque style. It had previously served as a Universalist church.

Today, Iglesia Bautista Hispana is more than just a building. It is a diverse family. The congregation includes believers from sixteen countries. United in Christ, they come together to worship and serve.

The church is affiliated with several organizations. These include the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist Convention of New York. It also includes the Metropolitan New York Baptist Association. The Iglesia Bautista Hispana is part of the Hispanic Baptist Association of NY/NJ.

A key part of Iglesia Bautista Hispana is its células. These small groups meet throughout the New York metropolitan area. They gather in homes and workplaces. They also meet in nursing homes. These células create intimate spaces for friendship. They allow members to share Christ and His word.

Each célula typically consists of 3 to 15 people. They meet weekly outside the church. Their purpose is to evangelize and disciple others. They worship God. They also serve, build each other up, and enjoy fellowship. The ultimate goal is to grow and multiply these groups.

These células provide a safe space. People can connect on a deeper level. They can share their faith in an atmosphere of trust. They can build lasting relationships.

Iglesia Bautista Hispana continues to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It does so both in the temple and through its células. The church is a testament to faith and community. It embraces believers from all walks of life. It offers a welcoming space for spiritual growth.
