“Envision a place,” someone once said, “where diverse faiths meet.” That place is the World Religions Center. Today, we stand before a building that fosters understanding. It promotes respect among different religious traditions. The World Religions Center at Harvard Divinity School advances interdisciplinary exchange. It supports international learning and research on world religions.

The Center has a particular interest in historical and contemporary interrelationships among religions. It examines theological, philosophical, and ethical challenges. These challenges face religious communities today. The Center engages the academic community. Faculty, students, and staff of Harvard Divinity School participate. The wider scholarly community is also involved. Religious practitioners, policymakers, and the public are welcome too.

Josep Lluís Sert designed this building. He was the dean of the Graduate School of Design. Sert planned the World Religions Center around a central courtyard. It reflects a Mediterranean style. The design fits into its domestic context. The building serves as both a residence and a study center. It complements the Divinity School across the street. Sert’s design allows light to flood the interior. The building encourages reflection and dialogue. It provides a comfortable space for study.
