This isn’t just any theater. It’s a Berlin institution. Since January 3 1987 this Neukölln gem has been dazzling audiences. Its location between Hermannplatz and Reuterplatz is perfect. It’s a vibrant hub. It pulsates with the energy of the city.
Initially the shows took place in a literal cellar. Can you imagine the intimacy? The atmosphere? The closeness to the performers? But the Theater im Keller’s popularity soared. Founder Michael Brenncke who sadly passed away in 2024 moved the operation. He relocated it to a former shop. This savvy move ensured the theater’s continued success. It’s a testament to his vision and passion.
The Theater im Keller is known for its modern take on travesty. Forget dusty old clichés. This is travesty reinvented. Expect witty comedy. Expect dazzling dance routines. Expect powerful vocals. The shows are a lively mix. The mix contains German and English songs. Many of these are performed live. The current show Circus der Travestie – Timetravel in Drag promises a magical experience. The theater itself underwent a significant renovation in 2021. Thanks to the enforced closure during the pandemic. The renovation included modern air filters. It boasts a comfortable seating area. This area comfortably seats 35 people. There is also a Mediterranean-inspired gastrobar. It’s open exclusively on performance days. This adds to the overall experience. It creates a sophisticated and delightful evening.
