What does it mean to build a life in a new country? Here, at the Adolph and Regina Frenkel House Plaque, we uncover a story of immigration, entrepreneurship, and community involvement. The plaque marks the site of a home, once a symbol of the American dream realized. Adolph Frenkel, a Bavarian immigrant, arrived in the United States in 1852, seeking opportunity and a new beginning. He found it in Galveston, Texas, where he climbed the ranks in the booming land and livestock industry, eventually becoming a cashier for the renowned Leon and H. Blum Land Company. Not content with just one career, Adolph later established his own produce business with his son, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. He also became an agent for the New York Life Insurance Company, securing financial well-being for himself and others. In 1884, Adolph purchased this house, a testament to his hard work and success. But the story doesn’t end with Adolph. His wife, Regina, whom he married in New Orleans in 1885, also left an indelible mark on Galveston. A woman ahead of her time, she dedicated herself to social causes. During World War I, Regina selflessly served with the Red Cross. She was an active member of the National Council for Jewish Women and a devoted congregant of Temple B’Nai Israel. Her compassion extended to leading the Lasker Home for Homeless Children, providing care and a safe haven for those in need. The Adolph and Regina Frenkel House Plaque stands as a reminder of their legacy, proving that the American dream was, and still is, built on hard work, determination and a commitment to making a difference in their community.
