“Heavenly Bamboo Manor.” Does that name spark your imagination? It should because we are in Tianzhu.

Tianzhu is an area and a town. It sits on the southwestern corner of Shunyi District in Beijing. Tianzhu lies south of Nanfaxin and Houshayu Towns. It is west of Renhe and Liqiao Towns. Jinzhan and Sunhe Townships are to the north. Konggang Subdistrict is east of here. Capital Airport Subdistrict surrounds Tianzhu on three sides.

Tianzhu has a rich history. Its name comes from Tianzhuzhuang. Tianzhuzhuang means Heavenly Bamboo Manor. It was an imperial garden during the Liao dynasty. Imagine emperors strolling through bamboo groves. This area was once a village. It was part of Shunzhou during the Ming dynasty. In 1719, Tianzhu Village became part of Daxing County. Longshan and Taoshan were incorporated in 1908. From 1941 to 1956, it was part of Shunyi County. Tianzhu Township was established between 1956 and 1963. It transformed into Tianzhu People’s Commune from 1963 to 1983. Later, Tianzhu Township was reinstated until 1989. Tianzhu Town was established between 1989 and 1998. Since 2000, it has been known as Tianzhu Area.

In 2020, Tianzhu had 32979 residents. The population density was 1400 people per square kilometer. Tianzhu covers 24.04 square kilometers. It stands 30 meters above sea level.

Today, Tianzhu is known for its economic activity. The Tianzhu Comprehensive Bonded Zone is a major player. It drives China’s cross-border pharmaceutical trade. In 2024, pharmaceutical trade reached 106.9 billion yuan. This was a 6.39% increase year-over-year.

Tianzhu focuses on rare disease drug supply. A dedicated zone was established. Imports of rare disease treatments increased by 95%. The import value surged by 37.69%, reaching 21.75 billion yuan.

Expedited customs clearance supports this growth. Faster distribution of medications is now possible. Major global pharmaceutical companies operate here. These include Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and Novartis.

Shunyi district is accelerating high-quality development. It aims for an economic output of over 330 billion yuan. The modern service industry should reach 150 billion yuan. Tianzhu bonded zone aims for an annual trade value exceeding 200 billion yuan.

Ten rare disease drugs have been approved in Beijing. These are purchased globally. They are transported through the Tianzhu bonded zone. These medications clear customs once. They are used multiple times outside the zone. This ensures continuous availability for patients. Rare disease patients receive top-tier care here.

The Tianzhu area is composed of 11 subdivisions. These include three communities and eight villages. Xiwang Huayuan Community is one. Nanzhuyuan Yiqu Community is another. Lantian Community is also here. Tianzhu Village is one of the eight villages. Loutai Village is another. Lanshan Village is also part of Tianzhu. Longshan, Taoshan, and Yang’erying Villages are here too. Ershilibao and Xiao Wangxinzhuang Villages complete the list.
