Seven major FM stations broadcast from Potosi Tower. They blanket Las Vegas with music and news. Potosi Tower isn’t just a steel giant. It’s a silent storyteller, perched high in the Spring Mountains. This peak, also known as Double Up Mountain and Olcott Peak, stands about 30 miles southwest of the glittering Las Vegas Strip. Potosi Tower and the mountain it calls home have a rich history, far removed from the city’s vibrant energy. Long before the neon lights and casinos, the Chemehuevi shamans used the mountain’s giant cave for vision quests. They sought spiritual guidance in its depths. Can you imagine the echoes of their chants within those cavern walls? Later, Mormon settlers in 1855 discovered lead and other metal ores. The Potosi Mining District sprung to life on the mountain’s western slopes, fueled by dreams of silver and lead. The name Potosi? A nod to a Wisconsin mining town, which itself took inspiration from the legendary Cerro Potosí silver mine in Bolivia. A mountain named after another mountain, a testament to the enduring allure of precious metals. Potosi Mountain, however, holds a somber memory. In 1942, TWA Flight 3 crashed into its slopes. This tragic accident claimed 22 lives, including the beloved actress Carole Lombard. The mountain’s silent strength witnessed a moment of profound loss. Today, Potosi Tower dominates the skyline, a hub for communication. Seven full-power FM stations, plus a translator, beam their signals from its peak. KXTE, the first station to broadcast from Potosi, made history as the first in the US to transmit in HD Digital. An amateur television repeater, N7ZEV, also calls Potosi Tower home. Even NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts warnings and updates from this lofty perch. Potosi Tower. It’s more than just a communication hub. It’s a link to the past, a beacon in the present, and a silent observer of the ever-changing landscape below.
