Why is it called “Amiberg”? We’re standing at the foot of Schlehenberg, a place with two names. Officially, it’s Schlehenberg. But locals often call it “Amiberg.” This 64-meter-high hill isn’t a natural formation. It’s a “Trümmerberg,” a rubble mountain made from the debris of World War II. Schlehenberg holds a unique piece of Berlin’s history, intertwined with the city’s divided past. After the war, two bunkers built for the Marienfelde population couldn’t be destroyed. The existing rubble mountain, Marienhöhe, was overflowing. So in 1950, debris started piling up here, eventually forming Schlehenberg. This continued until the hill reached a height of 15 to 20 meters and contained over 600,000 cubic meters of rubble. Its strategic location on West Berlin’s southern edge caught the attention of the US Allies. In 1962, they decided to build the Radaranlage Marienfelde, a radar station, atop Schlehenberg. This provided a clear view into East Germany. The radar station, completed in 1965, became a silent observer of the Cold War. It operated until 1991, a testament to the tensions of the time. Finally dismantled in 1996, the station’s presence is still felt in the name “Amiberg,” a reminder of the American forces stationed here. Today, Schlehenberg is a peaceful green space. You can walk along its paths, enjoying the view and contemplating the layers of history beneath your feet. From wartime bunker to Cold War outpost, Schlehenberg stands as a symbol of Berlin’s resilience and transformation.
