Suddenly, I was drifting along a revitalized waterway. This is the Liangma River. It is a thread of blue weaving through Beijing’s vibrant Chaoyang District.
The Liangma River’s story stretches back to the Ming Dynasty. For centuries, it served as a vital canal. Today, it has transformed into a beloved public space. The river flows for 9.3 kilometers. Its drainage area covers 14.25 square kilometers.
The river originates from a tributary in the northeast of the moat. It winds through the Second and Third Embassy Zone. The Liangma River connects Sanlitun, Yansha, and SOLANA. These are some of Beijing’s most fashionable commercial hubs. It also traverses Chaoyang Park. This is the largest urban park within the Fourth Ring Road. The river forms a thin 10km arc before joining the Ba River.
AECOM renovated the Liangma River and its surrounding landscapes. They aimed to create high-quality waterfront spaces. The project enhanced urban ecology. It rejuvenated the river and the surrounding area.
The Liangma River landscape corridor spans 5.575 kilometers. It is close to the diplomatic district and the Kempinski Hotel. The banks host diverse businesses. The area covers a construction area of 80.13 hectares.
The river’s function has evolved. It still serves flood control and drainage needs. But it is also a green cultural and recreational waterfront. The design core was to create green public spaces. It opens up possibilities for use. It inspires new urban vitality.
The project divided the river into four sections. They are “Leisure and Relaxation Waterfront.” “Cross-Culture Communication Waterfront.” “Business Vitality Waterfront.” And “Natural Ecology Waterfront.” The riverfront development shifted to “embracing the river.” This fosters renewed vitality. It provides opportunities for economic development.
Imagine reeds and calamus by the river. Weeping willows stand a few meters away. See Chinese scholar trees, acer truncatum, and pines. They all grow freely together. All kinds of flowers and trees create a unified forest.
Locals fish, jog, and walk along the river. You might see a red dragonfly on the riverbank. Or maybe even people kayaking. The Liangma River accommodates different lifestyles. It creates a colorful open park for everyone. The Liangma River is more than just a river. It is a symbol of Beijing’s ongoing transformation. It represents the city’s commitment to creating a livable and vibrant urban environment.
