Within these aged walls a literary giant rests. This is the Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas a place steeped in history and whispers of the past. More than just a convent it’s a repository of stories both sacred and secular.

The Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas stands proudly in Madrid’s Barrio de las Letras. Its origins trace back to the early 17th century founded by Francisca Romero daughter of a captain in Philip II’s army. Initially a modest church and convent it served as the final resting place for Miguel de Cervantes in 1616. The convent’s history is far more dramatic than you might imagine.

Construction of the current baroque church began in 1673 under the direction of architect Marcos Lopez. The convent’s buildings followed later between 1718 and 1752 designed by Francisco Ruiz and Juan Ruiz. The project wasn’t without its challenges. Construction pauses occurred due to conflicts among the nuns and even the death of its architect. Its serene facade belies the turbulent times it weathered.

The Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas holds a significant literary connection. Sor Marcela de San Felix daughter of the renowned Lope de Vega took her vows here. Imagine the somber funeral procession for Lope passing the convent allowing his daughter a final farewell from her window. Some of the furniture from the convent now graces the Lope de Vega Casa-Museo.

The convent itself nearly met a tragic end. In 1868 it faced demolition. The Real Academia stepped in saving it for future generations. The intervention led to the addition of commemorative plaques and reliefs further safeguarding its heritage. In 2015 the remains of Miguel de Cervantes found a new home in a monument within the church’s walls a fitting tribute to the famous author.

Today the Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas stands as a testament to resilience. Its simple yet elegant architecture speaks volumes. The church’s interior boasts a magnificent baroque altarpiece depicting a miracle attributed to Saint Ildefonso of Toledo. More than bricks and mortar this building is a living archive of Madrid’s rich past a poignant reminder of the literary giants and devout women who once called it home. The Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas is a living story waiting to be uncovered.
