Hidden away in the garden of Quinta da Póvoa stands the Carlos Ramos Pavilion. Have you noticed its unique triangular shape? It’s more than just an interesting design.

The Carlos Ramos Pavilion is part of the University of Porto’s Faculty of Architecture. Álvaro Siza designed it between 1985 and 1986. The pavilion occupies a special place within the faculty’s buildings.

Siza’s design considered the existing buildings. He also took into account paths, walls, and even the trees in the garden. The building’s twists and base were carefully planned. This ensured the trees’ roots wouldn’t be affected.

Look closely at the exterior facades of the Carlos Ramos Pavilion. They are bare. Notice how they contrast with the large studio windows facing the inner courtyard. Siza drew inspiration from 18th-century Portuguese houses.

The narrowest side of the atrium remains open. This narrow opening gives a view into the garden. It also provides a sense of protection.

Inside the Carlos Ramos Pavilion, there are three studios on each of the two floors. The studios are interconnected. You can see the other five studios from any window. This enhances the feeling of unity among the students.

Thin steel frames hold the large windows to the courtyard. This minimizes disruptions to the views between the inside and outside. The closed outer facades protect the building from the noise of the nearby highway.

Access to the Carlos Ramos Pavilion is from the far end of the garden. There’s a gate in the stone wall. It connects the original school grounds to the new complex that Siza built.

The Carlos Ramos Pavilion recently underwent rehabilitation. The project aimed to improve comfort and safety. The exterior facades and frames were renovated. Inside, the water, sanitation, lighting, and heating systems were replaced. The garden also got new lighting.

Since its reopening in January 2019, the Carlos Ramos Pavilion continues to serve as classrooms. Project 5 and other architecture courses are held here.

The Carlos Ramos Pavilion isn’t just a building. It’s a permanent lesson. It provides inspiration for future generations of architects. Its thoughtful design integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment. It respects the history of the site. The Carlos Ramos Pavilion stands as a testament to Siza’s architectural vision.
