“I was looking for a place to eat, but I found the one that offered a spiritual meal,” Pugoy said. This is the Bethany Baptist Church, a place of worship tucked away in Phnom Penh’s Boeung Keng Kang district. It might not be the first site you imagine when visiting Cambodia, but it’s a place where history, faith, and community intertwine. The church was founded in 1999, becoming the first multinational Baptist Church in Cambodia. It began as a small gathering of Filipino Baptists at a restaurant called the Bamboo House. They soon needed a bigger space, moving from house to house until they found their permanent home in 1999. But the journey to finding the church wasn’t simple. Christopher Pugoy, a Filipino member of the church, recalled his own experience of searching for a Baptist church when he arrived in Cambodia. He wandered around looking for a place to worship till he stumbled upon the church quite by accident – behind a KFC, of all places. Today, the church is a thriving community that serves a diverse congregation. It’s a place where people from all walks of life come together to find spiritual nourishment and support. The atmosphere is welcoming, and you’ll often hear hymns sung in a mix of languages – a testament to the church’s multinational roots. And while it may not have the grand architecture of some of Cambodia’s other temples, Bethany Baptist Church fills a vital role in Phnom Penh’s religious landscape, offering a haven of faith and community for those seeking it.
