Can learning be an act of rebellion? At CROS – Universitatea Alternativa, it certainly was. Here, in the heart of Bucharest, a group of students from Politehnica University of Bucharest dared to challenge the traditional Romanian education system. In 2008, they founded CROS, initially as a resource center for student organizations. It evolved into Universitatea Alternativa, a space where learning wasn’t about lectures and exams, but about autonomy and freedom. CROS – Universitatea Alternativa offered a radical departure from the norm. Students proposed their own courses. They learned from entrepreneurs and experts, not just professors. They earned badges for projects, not just grades. The focus wasn’t just on academic knowledge but real-world skills, collaboration, and critical thinking. CROS – Universitatea Alternativa was more than just a school. It was a vibrant community, a launchpad for startups and NGOs, a space for personal and professional growth. Sadly, this innovative experiment came to a pause in 2019. The core team, exhausted but fulfilled, decided to take a “gap year” to reflect and reimagine the future of alternative education. Though CROS – Universitatea Alternativa is no longer running its annual program, its legacy lives on. Its spirit of self-directed learning continues to inspire, reminding us that education can be a powerful force for change, driven by the passions and aspirations of the learners themselves.
